Wood Sculpture Artist Paul Stutzman
December 12 2009 to February 7 2010
This is the first time this work has been shown and represents over 20 years of work
“I wish I could say I did nothing but sculpture with my time on this earth, but my life and obligations have often been in conflict what I think I was put here to be. Carving large pieces of wood is very time consuming. I’ve never found a power tool that helps so it’s all done by hand. Mallet, gouges, rasps and sandpaper are my tools. Maybe that’s as it should be because in subtractive sculpture, you start with a given size and shape of wood or stone and remove the excess. Haste often means waste. When I’m working on a piece I spend a huge amount of time looking and visualizing, trying to bring out what that one rough piece of wood has hidden in it. I hope you enjoy.”
